a. Pengertian

Ujian Nasional (UN) adalah kegiatan pengukuran dan penilaian kompetensi peserta didik secara nasional untuk jenjang pendidikan dasar dan menengah. UN bertujuan menilai pencapaian kompetensi lulusan secara nasional pada mata pelajaran tertentu dalam kelompok mata pelajaran ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi. Mata pelajaran yang di UN-kan adalah Bahasa Indonesia, Matematika, Bahasa Inggris, dan IPA. Peserta UN dinyatakan apabila mencapai syarat – syarat nilai tertentu. Untuk tahun ini, peserta UN dinyatakan lulus jika memiliki nilai rata – rata minimal 5,5 untuk seluruh mata pelajaran yang diujikan, dengan nilai minimal 4,0 paling banyak dua mata pelajaran dan minimal 7,0 untuk mata pelajaran lainnya.

 

b. Standar Kelulusan (SKL)

Ada dua kemampuan yang diujikan dalam UN bahasa Inggris, yaitu:

1. READING (Membaca) Memahami makna dalam wacana tertulis pendek baik teks fungsional pendek berbentuk caution, greeting card, short message, invitation, announcement, label, advertisement, & letter maupun esai sederhana berbentuk descriptive, procedure, report, narrative dan recount dalam konteks kehidupan sehari – hari. Disini, siswa akan diuji kemampuannya untuk:

1. Menentukan gambaran umum (finding general idea)
2. Menentukan ide utama / pikiran utama (finding main idea)
3. Menentukan informasi rinci tersurat (finding explicit detailed information)
4. Menentukan informasi tersirat (finding implicit information)
5. Menentukan rujukan kata (finding reference word) dan
6. Menentukan makna (persamaan/lawan) kata, frase, atau kalimat.

 

2. WRITING (Menulis) Mengungkapkan makna secara tertulis teks fungsional pendek dan esai sederhana berbentuk deskriptif (descriptive, procedure, maupun report) dan naratif (narrative dan recount) dalam konteks kehidupan sehari-hari. Disini, siswa akan diuji kemampuannya untuk:

1. Menentukan kata yang tepat untuk melengkapi teks laporan (report) yang pendek atau Cloze Test (Finding an appropriate word to complete a short report text)
2. Menentukan susunan kata yang tepat untuk membuat kalimat atau Jumbled Words (Finding a good order of jumbled words to make a meaningful sentence) dan
3. Menentukan susunan kalimat yang tepat untuk membuat paragraph atau Jumbled Sentences (Finding a good order of jumbled sentences to make an acceptable paragraph)

 

c. Durasi

Waktu tersedia 120 minutes untuk 50 soal, jadi tiap item = 2.40 detik. Oleh karena itu kalian perlu:

1. Kenal / hafal dengan model soal UN
2. Mengetahui kata kunci tiap item soal UN
3. Mampu membaca soal secara efektif
4. Terbiasa mengerjakan soal UN (termasuk pembahasannya pula).

Soal model ini menanyakan tujuan penulis menulis teks. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menanyakan tujuan penulisan teks adalah sbb:

5. Menentukan informasi rinci tersurat (finding explicit detailed information)

Soal model ini menanyakan informasi yang berupa apa, kapan, dimana, mengapa, siapa, untuk siapa, dan bagaimana. Jawaban dari soal ini dapat ditemukan langsung secara tertulis didalam teks. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan informasi rinci tersurat adalah sbb:

1. What did the writer buy at that day? (apa/what)
2. When did the man ask for help? (kapan/when)
3. How was the girl? (how/bagaimana keadaannya) dll

 

6. Menentukan informasi tersirat (finding implicit information)

Soal model ini menanyakan informasi secara implisit. Untuk mengetahui informasi yang ditanyakan (dalam soal), kalian harus mencari petunjuk – petunjuk (clues) baik berupa kata, angka, dsb, lalu berdasarkan petunjuk tersebut kalian mengambil kesimpulannya. Misalnya dalam sebuah caution, ditanyakan dimana caution itu dapat kita temukan. Untuk dapat menjawabnya, kalian harus tahu dulu caution itu isinya apa. Jika larangan untuk ramai karena ada ujian, maka tempatnya bisa di sekolah. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan informasi tersirat adalah sbb:

1. Where can you find such caution?
2. Based on the text, how much does a cup of tea cost?
3. Which statement in NOT true?
4. Which statement is true?

 

7. Menentukan rujukan kata (finding reference word)

Soal model ini menanyakan kata ganti dari suatu kata tertentu (biasanya yang digaris bawahi). Untuk dapat mengetahui jawabannya, kalian harus mengetahui kata ganti (pronouns) dari kata tersebut dalam teks. Biasanya kata ganti yang dimaksud untuk menggantikan kata yang ada di kalimat sebelumnya. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan informasi tersirat adalah sbb:

1. What does the underlined word refer to?
2. The underlined word refers to…

 

8. Menentukan makna (persamaan/lawan) kata, frase, atau kalimat.

Soal model ini menanyakan persamaan /sinonim kata atau lawan kata /antonim (biasanya yang digaris bawahi). Kalian harus mempunyai vocabulary mastery yang cukup untuk dapat menjawab dengan benar. Hanya kalian yang dapat menjawab karena disini guru tidak akan bisa membuat kalian hafal dengan kosakata jika kalian tidak mau berusaha menghafalkannya. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan makna kata adalah sbb:

1. What does the underlined word mean?
2. The underlined word means…
3. The underlined word can be best replaced with…
4. What is the antonym of the underlined word?

 

9. Menentukan judul teks (determining the title of the text)

Soal model ini menanyakan judul yang tepat untuk suatu teks. Meski soal ini jarang keluar di tiga UN terakhir, tapi alangkah lebih baiknya jika kalian juga paham tentang model soal ini. Judul dalam teks soal dihapus dan kalianlah yang menentukan judul yang tepat. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan judul adalah sbb:

1. What is the best title of the above text?
2. The best title for the text is…

(Jawabannya adalah dalam bentuk kata/frase, BUKAN kalimat)

 

10. Menentukan hikmah (moral value)

Soal model ini menanyakan hikmah suatu teks (biasanya cerita). Sering pertanyaan ini keluar dalam soal dengan teks narrative, yakni hikmah yang dapat dipetik dari suatu cerita tersebut. Pertanyaan yang mungkin muncul untuk menentukan moral value adalah sbb:

1. What is the moral value of the text above?
2. What can you learn from the text?
3. The moral value of the text is ….

 

11. Menentukan kata yang tepat untuk melengkapi teks

Soal model ini berupa teks (biasanya recount) yang diambil beberapa kata untuk dijadikan pilihan jawaban. Biasanya diambil 3 atau 4 kata untuk 3 atau 4 nomor soal. Biasanya yang diambil berupa noun/k.benda, adjective/k.sifat, dan verb/k.kerja.

 

12. Menentukan susunan kata yang tepat untuk membuat kalimat

Soal model ini berupa kalimat yang diacak kata-katanya, dan kalian menyusun ulang. Tiap kata akan diberi nomor. Kalimat yang diacak biasanya dapat berupa langkah/step dari suatu teks procedure, perintah, larangan, pengumuman, dan lainnya.

 

13. Menentukan susunan kalimat yang tepat untuk membuat kalimat

Soal model ini berupa teks yang diacak kalimat-kalimatnya, dan kalian menyusun ulang. Tiap kalimat akan diberi nomor. Teks yang diacak biasanya dapat berupa procedure atau recount karena ada urutannya (step / event).

Dear Paula,

Hello Paula, how are you? It’s been a month since I last heard from you. Well, I just wanted to tell you that I was in a hospital last week. According to the doctor; I was infected by dengue fever.

At first, I felt my body became weak then I fainted when I was studying in the classroom. Then, I was taken to the hospital because of the high fever.

At the hospital, I was brought into the emergency unit. The doctor immediately gave some treatment. Finally, I had to stay there for one week. Everyday the doctor kept me on a drip.

At the seventh day, my condition was getting better. After the final check, the doctor gave me permission to go home. Now, I’m okay and because of my illness, I am now more careful about keeping in my house clean especially my room, I don’t want to get the same illness again.

9. Descriptive Text >> Menentukan Gambaran Umum

I like to eat out and I go to a restaurant for dinner at least twice a month. I go with my friends or my family.

Our favorite restaurant is an Indian restaurant in Cleveland Street in Surry Hills. It is not very big but it is always busy. There are only a few tables in the restaurant and there is a white tablecloth on each table. There is also a vase with lovely flowers on each table. There are plants in the corners.

The place is very clean and well lighted so the customer can have a nice talk while enjoying their meal. Traditional Indian music can be heard softly from the room speakers. We usually order hot curries and eat them with rice. Its Chain tea is a winner! The food is delicious but the price is affordable. In addition, the service is quick and friendly. We always have a pleasant evening at this restaurant.

A rocket looks like a long tube. Most rockets have fins on the back end to help them fly straight.

Rockets that carry fireworks can be short, only a few inches long. They are usually made of cardboard.

Rockets that go into space are huge. They are made mostly of metal.

Rockets burn fuel. Many different chemicals can be used as rocket fuel. The burning fuel makes hot gases. The gases blow out of the bottom end of the rocket. The hot gases shooting downward make the rocket go upward.

People use rockets to carry things through air and space. Different kinds of rockets carry different things.

First he called the Sheep. ‘Tell me, Sheep,’ growled the Lion, ‘do you think my breath smells?’ The Sheep thought the Lion wanted to know the truth. So she bowed low before the Lion and said, ‘Your Majesty, your breath smells terrible. In fact, it smells so bad that it is making me feel quite ill.’

This was not what the Lion had wanted to hear. Roaring angrily, and calling the Sheep a fool, he pounced on her and bit her head off.

Next he called the Wolf. ‘Tell me, Wolf,’ growled the Lion sharpening his claws, ‘do you think my breath smells?’ The Wolf had seen the dead Sheep on the way, and he had no plans to end up the same way. He bowed low before the Lion and said, ‘Your Majesty! How can you ask me that? Your breath smells as sweet as the flowers in spring, as fresh as the…’

He could not finish what he was going to say. ‘Liar!’ roared the Lion, and ripped him to pieces.

At last the Lion called the Fox. The Fox came warily; she had seen the dead Sheep and the dead Wolf on the way.

‘Tell me, Fox,’ growled the Lion, sharpening his claws and yawning widely so that the Fox could see his long sharp teeth, ‘do you think my breath smells?’

The Fox coughed and sneezed and blew her nose, and then clearing her throat noisily, said in a hoarse whisper, ‘Your Majesty, forgive me. I have such a nasty cold that I cannot smell a thing!’

Our bodies are made of flesh and bones. Anytime any part is injured we feel pain. So we try to avoid injury as much as we can. Usually it takes a painful lesson to teach us to avoid injury. The following was a particularly painful one.

I, like any young child, love to run around as quickly as I can. It is fun. However, there is danger of falling down which can result in painful injuries.

One day while playing “catching” with some friends I happened to run down a hill. I found that running down a hill was easy and I could go very fast. At the spur of the moment I decided to see how fast I could go. So I ran with all my might.

Alas, I ran too fast for my legs to keep up. One moment I was running, the next I fell sprawling onto the tarmac road. The shock was horrible as I scraped along the hard surface of the road.

The pain was intense as I lay on the road writhing. My hands, legs and face were bleeding from the many parts where my skin had been scraped off. When my friends came to help me they were horrified to see me in such a bloody mess.

Anyhow they summoned help and I was taken to the hospital. There they cleaned and dressed my wounds. All the time I felt as though I was on fire.

I suffered for two weeks thereafter every time they changed the bandages. It was terrible.

I learned my lesson. It is foolish to run down a hill.
